ABSTRACT

Due to the increase in the number of people raising pets and the increase in industry, pet food ‘food’ is becoming more and more sophisticated. Now, it has become ‘feed’, a staple food more expensive than ‘rice’, the staple food of humans, rather than the so-called ‘dog food’ left over from humans. As interest in animal welfare increases, consumer demands for the safety and quality of pet food continue to increase, and the need to overhaul the overall pet food system governed by feed management laws focusing on livestock feed is pointed out. There is a need to revise pet food laws. Plans for reviewing pet food laws include, first, enacting separate laws on pet food, second, establishing disciplinary targets, third, clarifying the responsibilities of the government and business operators, fourth, strengthening labeling standards, and fifth, improving the provision of consumer information.
