AB - The Korean peninsula, before it was divided into North and South about 80 years ago, was a single community with cultural roots and left behind various cultural assets. As a national religion, traditional temples, Buddhist paintings, and Buddhist statues are common assets of the Korean people that have been preserved for hundreds of years. Although direct connection to access and preservation due to the division of North and South is impossible, continuous attention should be paid to research and feasibility of ways to protect temple cultural assets in North Korea from fire and forest fires in order to preserve them. The materials used to make temple cultural assets are based on wood and paper, and are therefore very vulnerable to temple cultural assets and forest fires, as shown in many cases in South Korea. Many temples in North Korea are located in places that are easily affected by forest fires, so it is urgent to devise protection measures. Many temples in North Korea are in serious danger from fire and forest fires. If temple cultural assets are lost, calculating the physical damage is meaningless. In the case of temple cultural properties, since they are adjacent to forests, there is a very high risk that the fire will spread if the initial extinguishment of a forest fire fails. Traditional temples are composed of flammable wooden structures and paper and textiles, making them extremely vulnerable to fire. The combustion rate is also very fast, which increases the risk.
This study proposes a plan to protect temple cultural properties by preventing and responding to internal temple fires and forest fires as a way to protect cultural properties in North Korean temples in forest areas, based on the imperative to continuously preserve cultural heritage in North Korea, which is a common asset of the South and the North.
