AB - When we mean "style" by the unique usage of language, we can consider long titles, which exercise the function of "seeing as," the function of memory conservation, and aesthetic function, as one of the various stylistic devices distinguishing the Sino-Korean poetry from other poetic forms. Working with "long title" which is discernible in the Sino-Korean poetry, this article intends to explore its characteristic, function and origin in terms of stylistics.
Of various factors constructing a stylistic characteristic, this article considers the generic mode of the poetic form and personal inclination as the major factor deciding stylistic feature of the long title of the Sino-Korean poetry. Giving a long title to a poem is well exemplified by I Kyu-bo, I Je-hyun, An Chuk, Kim Chang-hyup, Tao Chien, and Tu Fu.
It is usually said that to give secondary constituents, particularly a preface to a text originated in the Han Fu. However, with the decline of the Fu which takes on the character of thematic or didactic verse and the prevalence of lyric verse, a new trend appeared: the function of the preface was replaced by title. It is one of the backgrounds in which a title became long in length. This change in secondary constituent came to the fore in the period of Southern and Northern Dynasties and took a root in the T'ang period. From this investigation, we can proceed to a conclusion that the long title of the Sino-Korean poetry is a derivative or a variation of the Han Fu's preface.
