AB - Gasa, an old form of Korean verse which had appeared in the late Gorye period, continued to be created and appreciated by the public until the period of enlightenment. However, preceding studies on the subject have neglected to identify the social classes who were participated in the creation of Gasa works. Based on the records of Gasa creators' inscribed identification, this study aims to classify the people who left their Gasa works during the enlightenment period into distinctive social classes.
Out of 251 Gasa works from the enlightenment period, 157 pieces retain their authors' names. The authors are mainly comprised of intellectuals, government officials, and religious persons.
Out of 58 Gasa works published in newspapers or magazines, 46 pieces are written under the authors' pen names or pseudonyms. Students constitute the major group of the authors, at times producing group works.
Out of the rest 99 Gasa works, the authors of 39 pieces are still identifiable. Most of the Gasa creators are religious persons, while intellectuals and high-class married women also claim the authorship of some works.
As such, the social classes of Gasa creators in the enlightenment period are to be classified into the intellectuals, the religious persons, the students, and the high-class married women.
However, a large number of Gasa works from the enlightenment period do not have their authors inscribed, so that the issue of author identification solicits further studies. This study has its merit in that it has classified the social classes of the Gasa authors with reference to the objective data.
