Constructing the Contents System of the Field of Grammar for Desirable Integration with the Field of Reading

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to examine the legitimacy of the integration between the fields of reading and grammar of the 2011 Korean Language Education Curriculum. Different from the apprehension that have been proposed regarding the integration of reading and grammar fields, organic integration of the two fields is possible assuring their own characteristics. For this desirable integration, it is necessary to have a procedure as follows:Currently, the integration between the two fields is focused on mutually exclusive uniqueness and independence of the fields. Therefore the contents of each field are constructed first, and the integration between the fields follows. A more desirable process, however, is to systemize learning elements first into learning contents considering the learning elements which can enhance learning ability of the field that should be integrated, and then integrate with the field. For this purpose, this study examines the possibility of the integration through examining field achievement standards and contents achievement standards of the present field of grammar and reading to examine the objectives of education is each field. In addition, this study also examines the present contents system of the field of grammar, diagnoses the problems encountered in their field as overlap of the learning contents, and systemizes the contents system as connective contents and unique contents. The connective contents are supported by the field of grammar to enhance the learning effect of the reading field, and the unique contents are contents to learn because of the inherent uniqueness of grammar. As a result of this study, the possibilities of the lateral combination within the field of grammar and the integration with the reading fields are presented.
