ABSTRACT

This article suggested a better method of teaching language derivatives which, until now, has been poorly handled in classes and in teaching materials. By teaching about affixes, which are an essential part of vocabulary composition, it tried to demonstrate the principle of vocabulary formation of the Korean language and to expand the range of vocabulary. In effort to expand the vocabulary range, the OHE instruction method is recommended. The OHE instruction method refers to a method that learners utilize their prior knowledge and find the whole meanings of derivatives instead of using the suggestions and explanations from an instructor. Using the O-H-E (Observation-Hypothesis-Experiment) method, learners can improve their range of vocabulary through the observation, hypothesis, and experiment stages. This method is a studying technique training process which enables 'learner-oriented' teaching and a learning process that ultimately makes learners and instructors not dependent on teaching materials but to foster independent language studying. In this study, learners observed (the meaning and the usage of) the suggested words for the prefix 'saeng' and the suffix 'jil', framed a hypothesis for their meanings and usages, and conducted a writing experiment using those elements of vocabulary. As a result, learners understood the whole meaning and usage of the derivatives and could predict the meaning of neologism and unfamiliar words. In particular, learners showed a high level of productivity and a heightened learning response for the 'saeng' affix and 'jil' suffix. After applying this method, the vocabulary range of the learners should be measured to find out how much it has improved. It is necessary to evaluate if their short-term or long-term range of vocabulary has improved. In this article, the study couldn't be extended to the regularity of affixes. In addition, this study left the formation of mini-syllabus which is extended to the whole derivatives based on a few affixes handled in this article as a task.
