ABSTRACT

This study deals with probing into the value and essence of modern Sijo based on the two characteristics, the feature of Sijo and modernity. This study starts from the reflection that there have not been a balanced perspective toward modern Sijo even though it is based on the those characteristics. With the materials of modern Sijo in the Korean textbooks of high school, I am going to verify the real condition of approaching modern Sijo and the perception related modern Sijo from the movement for resurrection of Sijo to today in diachronic way. From the viewpoint of education, modern Sijo has been dealt with the succession and development of tradition as a series of old Sijo. However, the feature of Sijo is the first condition for the modern Sijo to be Sijo. At the same time, it should be approached from the view that it plays a role to create and control the meanings, going beyond the regulation of form. Modernity has been paid attention only to the dimension of the deviation of form. On the contrary, I could see that there have been relationship with old Sijo. Therefore, it needs to proceed toward the direction to deal with contemporary life and reality about the content. Modern Sijo is based on the nexus of the feature of Sijo and modernity. So, the education of modern Sijo should start from the understanding those characteristics and it needs to develop to perception of the nexus and antagonistic effect.
