ABSTRACT

In this study, KSL education programs for students having multi-cultural backgrounds have been analyzed after conducting school visits, interviews with teachers, observations, and documents reviews. Recommendations are provided focusing on crucial components of Korean language education. To do this, academic and theoretical discussions for educating students of multi-cultural backgrounds were conducted while focusing on BICS and CALP. Also, contents-based teaching methods were revisited. Especially, discussions for several American ESL teaching methods were provided. Operations of American ESL categorized after reviewing previous researches. Reflecting the discussions of American ESL, observations of Korean KSL operations were provided. By focusing on status of students and teachers, structures of class and class operations, textbooks and teaching materials, the author categorized KSL operations into four types. After the analysis, the author suggested six recommendations for desirable operations of KSL education for students who have multi-cultural backgrounds; those are selection criteria and ranges for the objects of education, competence and shared value of teachers, developments and spread of content-based teaching methods, parents education and connection to communities, leadership of managers and their commitment, and supporting alternatives for remote schools.
