AB - This study was designed for the following research purposes. First, what is the effect of rubric-based self-evaluation on learners' ability to perform writing? Second, how does the rubric affect learners in argumentative writing when using AI? Third, what is the educational effect that appears when ‘AI utilization’ and ‘rubric education’ are conducted in parallel? in order to achieve the above research goals, data from 56 college students who participated in the pre-post evaluation and open questionnaire were analyzed using a revised and supplementary version of the 2025 Argumentative Writing Rubric developed by the National Institute of the Korean Language. a large proportion (82.1%) of the 56 learners evaluated that their writing skills improved in the second writing task (final exam) compared to the first (interim exam). The item that showed the greatest improvement in score was the ‘expression’ category (language conventions and norms d=0.7, sentence structure and vocabulary d=0.6). This suggests that writing ability improved as learners experienced a pattern of ‘observation-recognition-regulation’ of their language habits, amplified by the interaction effect between parallel ‘rubric education’ and AI’s spelling correction function. analysis of the open responses revealed that the interaction effect between ‘AI utilization’ and ‘rubric education’ contributed to learners' metacognitive growth.
In conclusion, this integrated approach indicates that ‘AI utilization with metacognitive criteria’, which promotes learners' thinking processes and self-monitoring, functions as a pedagogical approach beyond mere technical assistance in AI-assisted writing. Learners recognized AI as a ‘tool to increase writing efficiency’, while also acknowledging the need for ethical judgment and self-regulation in its use. This suggests that AI writing education should evolve into a learning design that integrates critical thinking and ethical reflection, moving beyond simple functional skill development.
