ABSTRACT

The total number of the strikes decreased in France between the two grand movements of general strikes, in 1919-1920 and in 1936. In the north suburbs of Paris, contrary to the national tendency, a growing tendency of the strikes was experienced, and their percentage relative to the national level was intensified. This phenomenon was a result due to the industrialization of the north suburbs of Paris, which accelerated after the end of the First World War. The transfer of the enterprises from Paris to the suburbs and the new foundation of the enterprises caused its industrial development. The installation of the industries reached the zones less developed. Consequently, the quantity of strikes increased in the north suburbs. The metal industry dominated in the region, where also the social conflicts were the most common. The building and public workers were also active, but less than in the end of the nineteen century. While the number of the strikes diminished in the wood industry during the interwar period, it progressed in the industry of the transportation. The others industries take a marginal place in these conflicts. The strike movements are tied up with the economic condition. The strikes came frequently during the prosperous period. On the other hand, the economic depression brought about their reduction. The rise of the cost of living brought about the birth of the strikes, and the concentration of the workers affected the frequency of the movement. At the development of the strikes, the syndicates, particularly, the C.G.T.U., played an important part, as well as the Communist Party. Turning the rise of the labor population to profit in the suburbs, these organizations were implanted in the region, and exerted a strong influence on the outbreak of the strikes. They contributed also to the change of the tactics of the strikers. The organization of the movement by the syndicates is conjunctive with the help of the organizations of the Left.
