AB - The French Radical Party founded in 1901 was a center-left political party that introduced a wide array of social reforms. This thesis is designed to revisit the process of the party’s establishment and to examine the historical significance of their programs and solidarism politically and philosophically behind their social reforms. Other focuses include the achievements and limitations of the conservative social reforms in a historical context that the radical republicans pushed forward as the third way, criticizing economic liberalism and collectivism.
The radical republicans who had been opposing group against the Monarchy all throughout the 19th century focused on political democracy and social laicization. They emphasized the importance of social reforms to address social problems rampant at the turn of the century. In particular, sparked by the Dreyfus Affair, they attempted to advocate their republican government by minimizing the influence of conservatism, monarchy, militarism and clericalism that threatened the Republic, and to develop the system steadily through social reforms.
The Radical Party pursued progressive and peaceful social reforms through a variety of social legislation from 1902 to 1914 as a major party in the French parliament. The party tried to differentiate themselves from revolutionary socialism and economic liberalism, respectively by advocating private ownership and supporting the government intervention in the socio-economic problems. The party’s social reforms were limited because they were based on the middle-class interest. Yet the reforms contributed to strengthening the social characteristics of the republicanism and the Republic that were no more than political ideology and political system.
