ABSTRACT

The word “apache” signifies a criminal or a hoodlum of Paris in particular but also of any big city in the French Belle Epoque. It was generally admitted that this word was introduced either by Victor Morris of Le Matin or by Arthur Dupin of Le Petit Journal and appeared for the first time in 1902 on the occasion of the affair Casque d’Or. But it is not simply true. I, after investigating into Le Matin, Le Petit Parisien, and Le Petit Journal from January, 1900 to June, 1902, discovered that Le Matin employed it on the 30th, June, 1900: an anonymous band of hoodlums of Belleville called themselves Apaches some time before the 30th June, 1900. And the affair Casque d’Or did popularize this word Apaches, which had been employed more than 10 times from 1900 to 1901.
