ABSTRACT

‘The Museum of Man’, a French Resistance organization, was rapidly destroyed by the suppression of the German occupation authorities before laying its solid foundation. However, another Resistance organization, ‘the Liberation-Nord’, survived the same sort of suppression for four years of the German occupation and its organ Liberation was published with many as 190 issues until the French Liberation in August 1944. These contrasting destinies of the two organizations resulted from the boldness of the Museum of Man exemplified by its fake national leadership under the name of ‘National Committee of Public Safety’ and the discretion of the Liberation-Nord which concealed the existence of its organization. They were also due to the difference of ranges of activities conducted by two organizations and their contacts with existing socio-political organizations. While the Museum of Man was not able to rely on any established political and social organizations, the Liberation-Nord could cooperate with the Socialist party as well as the two greatest labor confederations, CGT and CFTC. The industrial and regional organizations of CGT, CFTC and the Socialist party helped the Liberation-Nord to establish its organization and distribute its underground journal. In contrast, considerable variety of the occupations among all the members of the Museum of Man counted against reinforcement of its organization.
