ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to discuss the French feminist Marguerite Durand. She was a director of the daily La Fronde, which she hosted and published in Paris in 1897. It was the first daily newspaper whose publication was entirely handled by women, from planning and writing to producing. French women didn’t have citizenship rights yet, being considered minors in late nineteenth- century France. In addition, French society at the time was very conservative and skeptical of female ability. In that context, it was significant to show the capability of women as serious journalists. She also thought it was important for women to maintain beauty and femininity. She believed that women’s beauty, in the form of seduction, could be used as political tools for the cause of feminism. Some people criticize this perception and her lifestyle. However, it is undeniable that Durand and her journal, La Fronde, played a major role in the history of French feminism.
