ABSTRACT

After the death of Charles the Bald(†877), the princes of Aquitaine got away from the West Francia, and William the Pious created the principality in which Limousin was included. The dukes of Aquitaine used their agents to govern vast territory, and the aristocrats of Limousin obtained their own power. Until the beginning of the twelfth century, the nobles maintained a loose relation with the duke of Aquitaine, but to preserve the independence, they strongly resisted the Angevin’s centralized government. At the same time, the aristocracy of Limousin changed their kinship structure in vertical to adapt to the feudal society. As a result, the bilineal customs(the joint inheritance of the family property, the women’s right of inheritance, the joint retention of the title, etc.) had rapidly disappeared in the middle of the eleventh century, and the primogeniture in which the eldest son controled all the fortune whereas the younger sons and daughters were excluded emerged. Also, to acquire new power and wealth, the head of the family created the matrimonial schemes.
