ABSTRACT

The last quarter of the fifteenth century is considered a pivotal moment in the development of modern nation states. Yet in the Burgundian Netherlands, it was a period of turmoil, stemming from a succession crisis, urban rebellions, and economic disruption. These strifes have been explained in terms of dynastic rupture, princely centralization vs urban particularism, and as a failure in state formation. This paper critically reexamines these interpretations, highlights recent research that revises our understanding of the Burgundian legacy and polity, and suggests the question of the “common good” embodied in the issue of coinage debasement was crucial to the resolution of the crises.
