ABSTRACT

When was the link between text and image in history invented? And since when has it taken a modern and systematic form? Les Monumens de la Monarchie françoise, aves les figures de chaque règne questioned l’injure des terms a épargnées by Dom Bernard de Montfaucon is among the colossal works which invite a deep analysis of such a problematic. Philologist and historian of Antiquity, Montfaucon sought to write the history of each reign of the kingdom in a more neutral and balanced way. In doing so, he uses illustrations of monuments and objects from the past to explain the characteristic of the eras and to support his text. This attempt marked a decisive turning point in the use of monuments as witness of history and contributed to the more synthetic writing of chronology. With this in mind, we have reported on the work in question around the use of illustration. Then, in order to reflect on his unique place in the history of history in France and in the development of neighboring sciences, we scrutinized his imprint on his successors.
