ABSTRACT

From the middle of the eleventh century, the houses of Toulouse and Barcelona had competed for the supremacy of Southern France. In 1112, Ramon Berenger III succeeded in obtaining the county of Provence by the marriage, and their conflicts had been aggravated. In this situation, the viscounty of Narbonne was considered as a strategic point. In 1134, the viscount of Narbonne died in battle and his daughter Ermengard inherited the family fortune (at the age of five!). The princes quarreled about her guardianship, and the Barcelona league succeeded in marrying her to their companion. As a result, Ermengard became the viscountesse of Narbonne. After her husband’s death, she exerted alone the power and got intimately involved in the political affairs. In the middle of 1160s, as the Barcelona league was weaken, Ermengard joined Raimond V. After this convert, she arbitrated between the count of Toulouse and old colleagues, and exercised political leverage as a vassal of Louis VII.
