ABSTRACT

The encounter between Henri Bergson and Albert Einstein during the latter’s historical visit to Paris in March-April 1922 is considered as a confrontation between the “philosopher of time” and the genius physicist who revolutionized our way of thinking about time with the theory of relativity. According to the “standard” history, Bergson would have misunderstood the theory and, consequently, lost the battle. Such an approach is generally based on some narrow and sometimes dogmatic interpretation of the theory not only does it fail to reveal the whole story of the affair, but it is also misleading and risks an anachronism. This work first attempts to reconstruct the debate in question and describe its context and circumstances in detail. It focuses on analyzing the content of the very conversation between the two and revealing its cultural and historical significance, especially concerning its aspect of the dialogue between science and philosophy. Thus we will see that the Bergson-Einstein debate is not, as often said, a confrontation between philosophy and science or a dialogue of the deaf, but a debate between two philosophies of time or two philosophies of science.
