ABSTRACT

The war of the Camisards, which took place in the early 18th century against the absolute monarchy of Louis XIV, is remembered as one of the longest and most successful uprisings in French history. It is a remarkable history of resistance against the religious intolerance of the authority by the powerless people. Since the war of the Camisards, protestants have played an important role in French history. During the Restoration of 1815, the July Monarchy of 1830, and the Revolution of 1848, protestants stood out for their support of republicanism. In particular, protestants who played a leading role in the resistance against the Nazis and the Vichy government in the 1940s participated in both non-violent and armed resistance, protecting jews from the Nazis and fought against the ruthless Nazi genocide. The war of the Camisards is remembered to this day as the lead of the struggle for freedom which fought against injustice and oppression.
