ABSTRACT

This paper examines the background, process, and outcome of Louis Napoleon Bonaparte’s coup d’état of December 2, 1851, which toppled the constitution of the French Second Republic and paved the way for the Second Empire. The president and his followers used the extraordinary powers granted to the head of state to meticulously prepare for the coup, relying on the power of the army to neutralize opposition in parliament and Paris, and framing unexpected provincial resistance as Jacquerie to legitimize the coup and rally conservatives. This study aims to help us understand its impact on French political history by re-establishing what the coup meant to the Second Republic and to the French people of the time.
