ABSTRACT

The Battle of Waterloo was a turning point in european history and was a huge shock to the French. Waterloo has inspired not only veterans and historians, but also writers and artists. Numerous records were written and various studies were conducted to analyze the course of the battle, the factors that determined victory and defeat, and its impact on future generations. Poets and songwriters sang about the ‘memories’ of Waterloo, ruminating on the bitterness of defeat, and sometimes fueled anti-English sentiments by awakening patriotic feelings. Waterloo became a base of national spirit in the imagination of the French, and a ‘rite of passage’ for the ambitious youth generation to undergo. In this way, the Battle of Waterloo was reborn as a ‘glorious defeat’ in French national sentiment. It would be in fact a ‘spiritual’ victory, and although France lost, it did not lose its honor. Waterloo remains an excellent ‘site of memory’ in that it has created a french-style ‘culture of defeat’ that appeals to national sentiment and heals the war trauma.
