AB - This paper presents an investigation into the changing process of the Hangang River based on the discourse about its parks by the period. The study especially examined political and social drivers of the river during the period of municipal administration by mayors that held office after popular elections when the full-blown construction of parks along the river began along with the policy intentions of subjects that led changes to the spaces of the river and the changing patterns of park sites that were actually turned into parks along the river. The outcomes included the followings: first, the policies of making a park along the river promoted the recovery of naturality and the continuation of ecological restoration and reinforced landscape improvement and cultural foundations over time; secondly, park sites gradually emphasized visual designs and moved in a direction of valuing cultural activities and various experiences while keeping their sustainable ecological designs. Finally, the parks along the river made changes from the finite spatial meanings of natural environments to the meanings and roles as places offering landscapes, connections to the downtown, and experiences for citizens.
