ABSTRACT

During the period of Prince Hyomyung Chosun, court dances were extraordinarily well developed. Although he reigned only three years, twenty-one court dances were created during his period.Nearly a century earlier than Prince Hyomyung, French court ballet reached its peak under Louis XIV. Louis first danced in public in 1651 at the age of 13 and danced until 1670. In 1661 he founded the Academie Royale de Dance. Though Prince Hyomyung and Louis XIV lived in different times and places, both were interested in dance for the purpose of strengthening the power of the king. Also, they concerned themselves with art form and aesthetics in dance. The purpose of this study is to compare the dance art form between Prince Hyomyung and Louis XIV. This study illustrates the themes, dance forms and sets in their period.
