ABSTRACT

This study analyzed the primitivist propensity presented in L'apres midi d'un Faune performed by Vaslave Nijinsky. For collecting and analyzing data, first, researcher looked over previous research and collected newspaper, magazines and critics which related to the piece, "L'apres midi d'un Faune". Second, researcher who is a ballet dancer and a certified movement analyst (CMA) analyzed together a 12 minutes ballet videotape performed by Paris Opera Ballet Company. All movements in the videotape analyzed in a basis of Laban Movement Analysis theory. In the result of this study, it is presumed that Vaslave Nijinsky was the first primitivist choreographer because he not only created uncivilized and uncanny movement but also excited internal emotion of a human as emphasizing the instinct of human. Moreover, Vaslave Nijinsky described human's mentality and primitivist expression not directly but implicatively with moderation of movements. Therefore, the piece, "L'apres midi d'un Faune" involves a primitivist motive such as supernaturalism, a mystique, unfamiliarity, distortion, grotesque, intensity, and religious factor.
