AB - The purpose of this article is to identify the aesthetic structure of Beombu Dance from the perspective of Chang-Tsuism. Beombu Dance is the dance by the governed to dream of eradicating the discrepancy of social structure such as governance, coercion and exploitation of the governing class and to discharge their agony and wrath in the excess of mirth.
Milyang is the region where the hierarchy has been strongly settled because of the influence of Confucianism. Therefore there is big difference between the classes such as Yangban (Nobility), Peyongmin (Common) and Meoseum (Servants). The governed so called Meoseum and the lower class people should do their works in their positions. Thus they were physically exhausted and stressed. As it was impossible for them to be free from the coercion and pains in reality, they wanted to express their desire in the display of dance, even though temporarily only.
The life of the common people cannot transcend the reality. What they could do was to enjoy the mental freedom to go beyond the restrictions of the reality in the excess of mirth while dancing with all their hearts on the day of Milyang Baejungnori. It means the transportation to another time or space in the mental world. It means the travel from the negative to the positive, from the darkness to the brightness and from the coercion to the liberty to enjoy the mental freedom fully.
Looking into such an asthetic sense of beombu Dance from the perspective of Chang-Tsuism, it is found that Chang-Tsu requested us to make the life of nature itself remained intact guidelines of our lives as he considered the nature itself is the passage to the uppermost stage of life. Therefore he made it the utmost goal of life to break the fetters of life from the physical and material desireds and to enjoy the freedom and the liberty. Chang-Tsuism can connected with the asthetic structure of the mental thought embedded in Beombu Dance.
As they dancers of Beombu Dance were the ones who were not free from the pains and the coercion, their mental world was different from the public's. As they tried to pursue the freedom in everyday life, they created the easy living and natural looking display of dance eliminating the artificial and formative things.
As such if we look into Beombu Dance in Milyang Baekjungnori from the perspective of Chang-Tsuism, we can find meanings in that the nature of human beings show the virtues of innerside of human beings with artistic value, considering that the base of Beombu Dance is related to the consciousness of beauty which has the nature of the human philosophy.
