AB - The present paper has the purpose of examining the characteristics of beginners' and experts' thinking process in dance creation for developing creative dance programs. For this purpose, retrospective interviews were conducted together with non-participant observation, participant magnetic recording device and videotape while selected beginners and experts were requested to involve in dance creation with the theme of 'silence'. Collected data were put for inductive content analysis and following conclusion could be drawn therefrom.
It was found from the analysis that beginners as well as experts underwent the following thinking processes during dance creation: theme cognition, formation of images and verification. In the stage of theme cognition, particularly, experts approached to the very core situation for dance creation immediately upon cognition of theme, which had lasting impacts on the whole process of dance creation, even exercising decisive influences on the results eventually. In the stage of image formation, beginners turned out to be involved in creating dance movements based on the plotted story whereas experts made immediate and intuitive approaches to new movements by means of improvised ones. Both beginners and experts assessed their dance movements through feedback of their own bodies. Experts, particularly, set up unnaturalness in the flow of movements that have been verified through lots of experiences as a criterion for assessment. While beginners featured a sequential progressive stage step by step, experts tracked down the dance movements in juxtaposition.
This study has the limit of employing insufficient number of participants due to its method and its key word is limited to be 'silence', a fact that makes it difficult to apply the findings of the study generally. Furthermore, a qualitative and depth study method is adopted in this study which requires small number of participants, as it focuses not on the results but on understanding of the process and significance of dance creation by beginners as well as experts, instead.
