ABSTRACT

Based on what is mentioned above, this study examined the relationship between Korean dance in modern times and Korean politics. Korean dance in modern times was swayed by political power or almost completely ignored political matters. In the later period of the Japanese colonial rule, it was used for political propaganda (a representative example is Buyeo Hoesanggok ) by fascists. However, for some years after Korea’s independence from Japan, Korean dance was neither left nor right biased. During this period, many efforts were made to establish basic theories of Korean dance and create new dance works. Looking back at the history of Korean dance, Lee Ae-ju is remembered as one of outstanding figures. Her performance, delivered in 1987 in order to comfort the soul of Lee Han-yeol, who was killed fighting for the democracy of the nation, left a strong impression on Korean people for a long time.
