ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to identify the different movement characteristics of Mariinsky Ballet and Bolshoi Ballet through the analysis of Swan Lake , specifically the swans’ corps de ballet works in Act one. While Konstantin Sergeyev’s version (1950) and Yuri Grigorovich’s version (1969) serve as the set repertoire of Marrinsky Ballet and Bolshoi Ballet respectively, both of these restaged works generally maintain the traditional choreography by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov in 1895. Hence this study employs the Effort analysis of Laban’s theory to analyze how each company’s corps de ballet differently approaches and performs the (more or less) same choreography, as a way to identify the specific movement characteristics and to elaborate two different swan images produced in these works. In doing so, this study isolates each company’s distinct aesthetic value and artistic taste, while alerting the importance of developing further researches on the various ballet companies’ aesthetical uniqueness.
