ABSTRACT

This article discusses how dance interacts with music when they meet. To do this, I analyze Bourrée from Mark Morris's 「Falling Down Stairs」using J.S. Bach's cello suit no. 3. The conclusion is as follows: 1) When music and dance meet, category that the dance reflected music is much more intuitive and a direct sphere than the other way around. Therefore 'music visualization' in dance is the most fundamental process and the foundation of imagination to the choreographer. 2) The important thing in music visualization is to consider how much is the range of predictability of movement and how we create the tension by giving the audience the unexpectedness. In this sense, the music visualization by Mark Morris suggests an inevitable engagement of predictability and unpredictability. Therefore his musical interpretation enables us to 'hear the dance, to watch the music'.
