AB - In 2009 Merce Cunningham and Pina Bausch passed away, rekindling the debate on dance legacy and preservation. While some relate the difficulty of dance preservation to the dualism of ballet vs. modern dance, this study suggests that it is more related to the issue of performance and performativity found in their works as well as in the discourse of dance preservation. Reviewing the development and characteristics of performance and performativity in art and academe, I analyze the choices of the two companies’ foundations in regards to preserving their respective choreographers’ legacies as follows: materialization, continuation of performance, and recognition of dancers’ and audiences’ embodied knowledge.
