ABSTRACT

This paper presents an in-depth study of the concept and characteristics of performativity in relationto “New Aesthetics” as defined by Erika Fischer-Lichte. Using this perspective, it analyzes thechoreography “River of No Return” by Bang Hee-sun and identifies its performativity principles andcharacteristics through narrative inquiries. The paper aims to provide a theoretical foundation forexpanding the boundaries of choreography beyond the performing arts. The analysis of “River of NoReturn” reveals several performativity phenomena, including role changes, community building, andcavitation. Additionally, the audience becomes an active participant in the performance, transformingfrom passive viewers to actors who act upon their own will. The choreography also attempts to createcontact by dividing space through sound, breaking away from the traditional reproduction framework ofmodern dance.
