ABSTRACT

This study explores the characteristics of community dance as manifested in Chinese square dancing, analyzing its social and cultural roles within modern Chinese urban culture. The study contrasts square dancing with traditional communal dances of pre-modern societies, highlighting its emergence and distinctive features. The findings revealed that square dancing in urban public spaces served as a cultural expression and medium for social interaction, reinforcing social bonds and promoting community unity. It also addresse the potential issues such as environmental noise, urban aesthetics, and the competitive use of public spaces, suggesting the need for respectful and humanized urban space management. This interdisciplinary approach offers significant insights into the social value and practical implications of community dance, emphasizing its role in enriching individuals’ and communities’ lives in contemporary society.
