ABSTRACT

This study explores the expression of mélancolie by analyzing the choreography of Giselle's Act 2. The 18th century romantic ballet expresses human desire to escape reality in a fantastic and mysterious world. Among romantic ballet works, Giselle clearly shows the characteristics of romanticism with the theme of tragic ending and mélancolie. The study analyzes how mélancolie is expressed in choreographic terms through the Freud's concept of ambivalence and identification. As a result, we found how mélancolie is visually revealed through the emotions, movements, and gestures of dancers, and it can be said that the tendency of mélancolie is effectively expressed through the coexistence of love and depression in the pas deux.
