ABSTRACT

With the surge in the popularity of street dance in South Korea, the number of higher education institutions providing street dance education as a course or specialized major under the department of dance or applied dance. In this regard, this research examines the current status of street dance education, a practice-oriented discipline taught in institutionalized education system, based on the first-hand experiences of professors and students who participated in the programs. To learn participants’ perception of street dance education in Korean higher education system, semi-structured interviews were conducted with five professors and five students with more than six years of professional career as street dancers. We also adopted a phenomenological research approach and Tomlinson’s (2017) graduate capital model to analyze the collected data.
