ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to examine the NIHC as an example of archiving that reflects the characteristics of performing arts, and to reveal its features and significance. The findings show that the NIHC's archiving is systematized into three areas: transmission from body to body, creation and management of records, and promotion. The identified characteristics are as follows: first, the NIHC assumes an indirect role in transmission by supporting and managing the transmitters as custodians; second, it generates and utilizes records that reflect changes, thereby compensating for the limitations of traditional media; and third, it actively operates exhibitions, performances, and educational programs to preserve heritage through public enjoyment. Notably, the NIHC’s focus on preservation through public enjoyment signifies a shift in the traditional transmission process, which was centered on preservation of the original form and records, as it restores the role of the audience as participants in the transmission.
