ABSTRACT

This study explores how the temporal features of dance movements, such as tempo, rhythm, and body part coordination, influence emotional perception. While previous research has linked certain movement characteristics to emotions, many studies oversimplify the relationship between physical features and emotions by focusing on one-to-one correspondences without considering the integrative processing of emotional cues. This research addresses that gap by examining how variations in tempo and rhythm affect perceived emotions in dance. Participants watched dance videos with manipulated tempo and rhythm, categorizing the movements by perceived ‘tempo’, ‘rhythm’ and ‘emotion’. The findings show that faster tempos with complex body rhythmic coordination tend to evoke more positive emotions, while slower tempos with simple rhythm make emotional distinctions more difficult. The study highlights not only the importance of movement complexity and timing in emotional recognition, but also presents a theoretical framework linking temporal parameters with perceived emotions.
