ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to analyze how the female character Carmen is reinterpreted in three contemporary ballet adaptations choreographed by Roland Petit, Alberto Alonso, and Mats Ek. Using a qualitative comparative approach based on performance video analysis and related literature, this study explores choreographic expression, visual strategies, and gendered embodiment in each version. The findings reveal an evolution from objectified, stereotypical portrayals to autonomous and complex female subjectivities. While Petit emphasizes visual sensuality through the femme fatale archetype, Alonso highlights psychological intensity and resistance, and Ek reconstructs Carmen as a socially defiant and symbolically charged figure. The study concludes that contemporary ballet serves as a dynamic space for articulating gender discourse and visualizing performative identities on stage.
