ABSTRACT

This study offers a reinterpretation of the notion of imitation within the expressive domain of the 2022 revised Korean elementary physical education curriculum by utilising Derrida’s concept of différance. The concept of imitation is proposed not as the reproduction of a fixed archetype, but as a deferred and differential process of meaning-making. In the field of physical education, imitation is commonly regarded as the repetition of a teacher’s movements or the acquisition of skills. However, this approach has frequently been critiqued for its potential to restrict learner subjectivity and creativity. The present study adopts a novel approach by treating the curriculum as an interpretable text, thereby facilitating an analysis of expressive activity and imitation through the lens of différance. The findings suggest that imitation emerges as a generative, interpretive activity shaped by the learner’s bodily experience, perception, and context. This standpoint emphasises expressive activity as a dynamic site of meaning, rather than merely technical transmission, thus offering novel pedagogical possibilities for fostering subjectivity and creativity in physical education.
