ABSTRACT

This study examines the non-reducibility of the bodies of certified practitioners of traditional dance in the age of generative AI, focusing on the gap between technologically realized morphological similarity and human existential performativity. Drawing on Walter Benjamin’s aura and Michael Polanyi’s tacit knowledge, this qualitative literature review analyzes AI-based dance generation, interprets Gujeon-simsu (oral and embodied transmission) as a process of embodied tacit knowledge, and considers the non-reproducibility of aura. The analysis acknowledges that generative AI is rapidly expanding toward fine-grained body, hand, and facial motion. However, greater morphological precision does not necessarily encompass these trainees’ accumulated experience, embodied knowledge, and sensory awareness. Tacit knowledge formed through long-term training cannot be fully formalized as motion data, while aura emerges uniquely in specific times and places. Thus, even as generative AI advances, fully reproducing the existential experience and holistic performativity embodied in these practitioners remains difficult, underscoring their non-reducible value.
