ABSTRACT

This practice-based study examines the dialectical circulation between the tacit knowledge embedded in the researcher's choreographic practice of Talking to Democracy (2025) and the critical discourse surrounding the work. Premiered in May 2025 at the Memorial for Democracy Movement (formerly the Namyeong-dong Anti-Communist Investigation Bureau), the work was remounted in October 2025 following critic Shim Jung-min’s review and an in- depth interview. Grounded in Schön’s (1983) reflection-in-action and Nelson’s (2013) research-through- practice methodology, the study first articulates the choreographer’s own working hypotheses, formed independently during creation, then examines how the critic’s post-hoc concept of creative regeneration of a tragic site dialogically re-named them. Audience-reception data (N = 255) served only as a bounded, exploratory check on whether this concept was legible in audience self-reports, not as verification of artistic merit. Across seven scenes, the work reconstructed historical memory as bodily testimony through architectural-to-narrative transformation, metaphorical trauma representation, and a multisensory environment developed in collaboration with media artist Hwang Seon-jeong.
