ABSTRACT

Since Josef Beuys and Marcel Duchamp, art has transcended the mere creation of objects confined to a specific time and space, evolving into a dynamic entity that permeates life itself, and engaging in reciprocal influence with individuals and society. Within this context, if architecture is regarded as a subset of art, its aesthetic experience assumes paramount importance. Nonetheless, it is imperative to scrutinize how aesthetic elements and experiences shape public architecture — a manifestation of a society's physical and intellectual capital — through the myriad stages from conception to realization, and discern the aesthetic value that the completed edifice imparts to society. This inquiry remains pertinent in Korea’s public architecture milieu, which is often constrained by a discourse limited to “subjective taste.” This paper examines the primary aesthetic experiences of architecture that transcend temporal boundaries and their impact on the procedural trajectory from planning to the realization of the city halls of Berlin and Seoul, emblematic public structures in Germany and Korea built during the late 19th and early 21st centuries, respectively. By employing a cross-sectional analysis of influences, the study delves into the significance of aesthetics that both societies anticipate and actively seek in architectural endeavors.
