AB - Recently, as posthumanist theories gain weight in academia and the art world, Kant’s philosophy has become the subject of their criticism and challenge. This paper was prompted by Graham Harman’s view that Kantian aesthetics not only presupposes a “strict dichotomy” between human subjects and material objects, but also shows a “formalistic obsession” that centers on humans without much consideration for “things.” Contrary to Harman’s concerns, I will reveal that Kant never neglected the object with the concept of “disinterestedness,” the first analytical discussion on the judgement of taste. In addition, since the concept of disinterestedness has been formed in a pair with the concept of “illusion” even before Kant’s critical period, I will examine the relationship between the two concepts through the analysis of the relevant text. Furthermore, as Kant discusses beautiful art through the “imagination of the artist (genius)” and “aesthetic idea” in the latter part of the Critique of Aesthetic Judgment, unlike Harman, who did not consider the artist element in his concept of art, I will put forth one possible explanation for Kant’s theory of art to counter Harman’s claims in defense of his ideas with the relationship between “disinterestedness and illusion” mentioned above.
