ABSTRACT

This paper explores the aesthetic sensibilities of traditional Korean architecture in the works of Lim Chung-sup, born in 1941 in Jincheon, Chungbuk, and who moved to New York in 1973. Lim evokes and reconstructs memories of his hometown through diverse media, including painting, relief, assemblage, and installation. His installations prominently feature architectural elements rooted in Korean traditions. For Lim, his hometown symbolizes both a space of loss and absence and the foundation of his existence, deeply influencing his artistic philosophy and concepts. Chapter Ⅱ explores how Lim’s memories are materially expressed through architectural elements, drawing on philosophical discourse. Chapter Ⅲ analyzes traditional Korean architectural features in his installations, focusing on the spatial aesthetics of the courtyard’s void, the rhythmic interplay of opening and closing walls and gates, the subtle light through traditional windows and doors, and the interplay of horizontal and vertical dimensions observed in the contrast between traditional Korean roofs and New York skyscrapers. Lim’s art embodies the hybrid identity of an immigrant artist and reflecting the intersection of Eastern and Western cultures. Accordingly, this study interprets his works from an integrative perspective highlighting his ability to merge Eastern and Western philosophies and aesthetics.
