AB - One of the central tendencies in 20th-century (Modernist) painting was the “struggle of abstraction against representation,” a trend that Postmodernism deepened by questioning or rejecting representation itself. However, is this an adequate understanding of representation? In what sense might representation not have disappeared but require a different mode of understanding? This paper addresses these questions through the lens of Jacques Derrida and Jacques Rancière and examines the relationships between representation, resemblance, and the text-object dynamic. While Derrida famously declared that “there is nothing outside the text,” emphasizing the materiality of the text in meaning-production, he did not entirely negate the relationship between text and object. In Signéponge, Derrida restores the concept of the “thing,” approaching the text from the perspective of the object. This paper critically engages with Derrida’s work to rethink the relationship between Modernism, Postmodernism, and Realism, and to redefine the problems of meaning-production and representation. It will also explore Rancière’s concept of “archi-resemblance,” which theorizes the relationship between text and object without reducing text to a mere reflection of reality. Rancière’s distinction between representation and its regime, as well as his separation of an object’s referentiality from its meaning, offers theoretical tools to clarify ambiguities left unresolved in Derrida’s work.
