ABSTRACT

Ko Yu-seop, Korea’s first art historian and aesthetician, has received limited interpretive attention. This study offers a contemporary reinterpretation of his thought that emphasizes the dynamic self-awareness it reveals. Ko proposed the “interpretation of good will” as a means to overcome past irrationalities and guide the construction of a rational future. In his later writings, his concept of “ascending interpretation” integrated contemporary rationality into the Confucian model of individual consciousness characteristic of Joseon culture. Despite historical constraints on expressing a distinct Korean cultural life, he pursued subjective interpretations of art and aesthetics, exercising free will and laying the foundation for autonomous Korean aesthetics. The motifs of “ascension” and “co-ascension” reflect the aesthetic spaces of “freedom” and “life.” Ko combined the meticulous study of artifacts with reflective contemplation and established a methodology that linked aesthetic sensibility with a lived approach to life. His work demonstrates how aesthetic inquiry can shape intellectual and cultural self-awareness, creating a lasting framework for understanding Korean art and thought.
