ABSTRACT

While studying symbolic forms, which are mental forms of expression, Ernst Cassirer tried to understand them as a whole rather than individually, and eventually reached a common meaning that penetrated symbolic forms. This study focuses on the idea of organic form in that he wanted to see language as a whole. Organic form is based on the idea that there is a whole before parts and presupposes that it is a form by the autonomous production of the mind. Looking at language from the perspective of organic form means that the whole is segmented into parts and parts are integrated into the whole in an organism called language. Therefore, this study discusses the idea of an organic form of language based on the linguistic theories of Herder and Humboldt and highlights the general characteristics of “language as a whole” in Cassirer’s linguistic theory. In addition, it discusses the composition and direction of language, focusing on “representation,” “representative function,” and “analogical expression” in Cassirer’s view of language.
