AB - This study examines the characteristics of the humanistic thought and aesthetic consciousness that emerged in twentieth-century Korean society through the philosophy and aesthetics of Yi-Gyeong Zoh Johann (怡耕 趙要翰, 1926–2002), and explores how these ideas have been inherited and transformed within the cultural context of twenty-first-century Korea. Focusing particularly on Yi-Gyeong’s essays and aesthetic discourses, the study analyzes his perception of his era and his critical awareness of Korean society, thereby reexamining his reflections on human values and the role of art.
The study first reviews the development of Yi-Gyeong’s philosophy and aesthetics in order to investigate his views on humanity and art as formed by the interaction between the individual and society. It then analyzes his critiques and concerns regarding higher education, modern technology, and younger generations, examining how he understood the problems of humanity and art amid the rapid process of modernization. Furthermore, by applying the hybrid interpretive perspective on Korean beauty that characterizes the later stage of his aesthetics to the cultural conditions of twenty-first-century Korea, the study seeks to interpret the aesthetic significance of contemporary Korean culture.
Through this inquiry, the study argues that Yi-Gyeong’s thought provides a valid aesthetic framework for interpreting contemporary Korean society and culture, while also suggesting future directions and possibilities for the development of Korean aesthetics.
