AB - An Exploration of Korean Aesthetic Beauty (1999), the final work of Zoh Johann, is the culmination of the “philosophical insights accumulated throughout his life by the philosopher and aesthetician through research on Western philosophy, art philosophy, and aesthetics.” A personal encounter with Kim Whanki (Suhwa) served as a significant stimulus and catalyst in the path of Zoh’s “philosophical work” leading toward the elucidation of the spirit of Korean art. In 1978, four years after Suhwa passed away, Zoh published an article titled “Harmony and Exploration with Beautiful Nature” in the journal Space, in which he posited “beautiful nature” as a concept that encapsulates the essence of Kim’s art. Therefore, this study broadly questions the significance of the reality and conditions of Kim (and his art) in the trajectory of Zoh’s “philosophical endeavor” as it advances toward an exploration of Korean beauty. Furthermore, it examines how the characteristics of Korean art defined by Zoh in An Exploration Korean Aesthetic Beauty (asymmetry and conformity to nature) resonate with the reality and specific conditions of Suhwa’s artistic world—which he sought to highlight in his theory of Kim Whanki—and how these elements are embodied in concrete form.
