AB - This paper focuses on the stimuli and shocks inflicted upon the bodies of modern individuals by new media—technological media—that were introduced into modern Korean society through various routes. Modern individuals had to adapt to these new media as a reality of daily life, which caused significant physiological fatigue and stress. The process by which they adapted to the modern media environment, the interplay between the body and new media while enduring the sense of alienation or displeasure it presented, was a process of embodying the new standards of these media and achieving a new “ratio of combination” or “state of equilibrium.” In particular, the remarks made by contemporary intellectuals and artists regarding new media arts, such as oil painting (Western painting), photography, and film, reveal the unique function and position of modern art as an “exploratory device” for researching reality. The introduction and acceptance of these new media arts represented a process through which modern individuals experienced the new media environment in advance, thereby preparing for the coming future. Discourses on new media arts highlighted affect and the expansion of sensory capabilities offered by these media, while simultaneously emphasizing the mental capacity to protect and maintain the self by pursuing the “humanization of technology” in response to its dominance.
